Current Situation

Gaza is a place where life has become nearly impossible. Since October 2023, a wave of relentless airstrikes and a complete siege have left more than 33,000 people dead and over 75,000 injured. Families have been forced to flee not once, but multiple times, with 90% of the population displaced—now crammed into tents, schools, or sleeping in the open. Food is scarce. Clean water is almost non-existent. Gaza’s people are surviving on the edge, and famine is knocking at the door.

Underlying Causes

Blockade and Isolation

For over 16 years, Israel and Egypt have imposed a strict blockade on Gaza. It has choked the economy, restricted travel, and made it nearly impossible to get medicine, fuel, or construction materials. The October 2023 escalation made things even worse.

Destructive Armed Conflict

Following Hamas’s attack on Israel, the Israeli military launched a massive campaign that destroyed homes, hospitals, and entire neighborhoods. Civilian areas have been flattened, and people live in fear with no safe place to go.

Economic Ruin

Gaza’s economy has collapsed. With entire industries destroyed and borders closed, unemployment is over 47%. Most families now depend entirely on humanitarian aid just to survive.

Humanitarian Challenges

Starvation and Famine

Over 1.1 million people are on the brink of famine. Food isn’t just expensive—it’s nearly gone. Families are surviving on flour and dirty water. The markets are empty, and aid convoys are constantly delayed or blocked.

Health System in Collapse

Only 12 out of 36 hospitals still function, and those are barely hanging on. Surgeries happen without anesthesia. Premature babies are dying in incubators with no power. Doctors are working without supplies, and some have had to evacuate under fire.

Mass Displacement

Nearly 1.9 million people have been forced from their homes. Many live in overcrowded shelters or on the streets with no toilets, no showers, and little protection from cold or disease.

Violence Against Women and Girls

As law and order collapse, women and girls face increased sexual violence, harassment, and exploitation. Safe spaces are rare, and support services are stretched beyond capacity.

Psychological Trauma

Children are growing up surrounded by death and destruction. Over 500,000 children urgently need mental health care. Many haven’t had a night of uninterrupted sleep in months. The trauma is deep and long-lasting.

Lack of Clean Water and Sanitation

Over 90% of the population doesn’t have access to safe drinking water. Sewage floods streets, and diseases like cholera loom over communities with no sanitation.

Aid Blocked at the Border

Aid trucks wait for days—or are turned away altogether. Supplies rot before they can reach the people who need them most. Northern Gaza is almost completely cut off.
